how to be a good dad

5 myths busted about men who are about to start their journey of fatherhood

Men, and Dads specifically, are as new to a new-born as a new-mom. No baby is the same and no adult is the same. Both parents will have their own unique style to raise their little one - examples might be one’s own parents. Apart from some technicalities of handling a new-born, both mom and dad are equally qualified to enter this role and learn on the go!

1.No it's not just “Daddy Cool” - How do I take care of a new-born - every new-dad asks.

Every dad is frightened, overwhelmed and nervous. He was only responsible for himself, but now he is feeling the emotions of keeping another human, whom he adores and loves, alive for the rest of his life. For a man to accept those feelings is a lot and has physiological effects too (on that later ). So, dads are nervous and they could definitely use some guidance at this point!

2. Only moms can give comfort to their newborn.

So not true - moms breastfeed which can calm a baby almost anytime. But, the warmth of skin-to-skin can be given by a dad also and it has happy and calming benefits for both dad and baby. It helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, the heart rate , breathing and even helps the baby put on weight.

3. What is Dad’s guilt ?  There is no such thing

Oh no no! It exists. Today more and more corporations are giving paternity leave because men themselves have expressed a desire to participate in raising their child. So when they are not present for the important days or miss things because they are away from the work - they suffer from Dad guilt - they just don't know how to express it yet!

4. What gift for a dad? He does not like any gifts!

Major misconception. Men love sentimental as well as utility gifts which make them feel special and appreciated. Men enjoy pampering too. To make the parenthood journey more inclusive, why not give him a bundle to make him feel special in this new chapter of a couple’s life.

5.Men are not capable  to raise a child

Men and women are different from each other - scientifically proven that they are built differently. But! Every parent, mother or father, is wired similarly, irrespective of gender. There is enough research to confirm - men are as primed as women to raise the child and learn on the job, they both do!

So all you DADs! Don't let anyone tell you you dont know your stuff - You are as capable to raise your child as the mother!
